Congresswoman Matsui Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act

CA - Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement marking the 50th anniversary of the landmark Civil Rights Act:

"Today we mark the 50th anniversary of one of the most significant laws in our nation's history. The Civil Rights Act banned discrimination in public places and in employment, and facilitated the long overdue integration of the American school system. This anniversary is also an opportunity to honor and remember the courageous leaders of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Their courage and conviction was directly responsible for the passage of this historic legislation.

"While the Civil Rights Act represented enormous progress, there is more work to be done. Enforcing and strengthening policies against discrimination, including passing a renewed Voting Rights Act, is essential to the success of our nation. As we celebrate this anniversary, I promise to continue fighting to ensure that all are treated equally under the law."

President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction, into law on July 2, 1964.
