Congresswoman Matsui Statement on House Republicans' So-Called Emergency Drought Legislation

Bill remains a water grab that would jeopardize northern California Water Rights; override the Endangered Species Act and harm the Delta

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement in response to the emergency drought legislation introduced last night by Representative David Valadao:

"Here we go again. Rather than taking the time to craft legislation that includes input from all stakeholders and will benefit the entire state, House Republicans have doubled down on the deeply flawed legislation introduced last year. Once again, this bill is nothing more than a water grab. It overrides the Endangered Species Act, and would allow more water to be pumped from the Delta, regardless of whether or not the Delta has the water to spare.

"We need serious proposals to tackle California's long-term water woes. This bill is anything but that. Let's take the time to craft responsible legislation that brings all parties to the table to solve California's water problems through a balanced approach."
