Congresswoman Matsui Statement on the Introduction of the Republican Ryan Budget

Budget proposal is more of the same; would threaten our economic recovery and protect the wealthiest at the expense of the middle class and seniors

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) released the following statement in response to Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's proposed budget for fiscal year 2014:

"The Republican Ryan budget released today is a bad case of deja vu. It is quite simply a repackaging of the same policies that were resoundingly rejected by the American public last November. This budget would take our country in the wrong direction by favoring tax cuts for millionaires and Big Oil over our seniors, middle class, students, job creation and infrastructure investments.

"If the Republican Ryan budget were ever to become law, it would double out-of-pocket costs for seniors, weaken Medicare and destroy the Medicaid safety net, undermining the health and economic security of the elderly and disabled. It would also raise taxes on middle class working families while slashing them for the mega-wealthy, and incentivize companies to move their operations out of the country, resulting in lost jobs.

"While there is no question that we should stabilize our deficit, threatening our economic recovery and cutting programs that benefit our most at-risk populations is not the answer. We need to move away from the political games. We need a budget that will help solve the problems our nation is facing, not protect special interests. I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass budget legislation that is fair and balanced."
