Congresswoman Matsui Statement on President Mubarak Stepping Down

CA Today, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (D-Sacramento) issued the following statement on the recent developments in Egypt:

Over the past 18 days, the Egyptian people have been clear in their calls for new political leadership in their country. That change is happening as we speak. Now that President Mubarak has stepped down, the real work for a truly democratic Egypt must begin. I hope that that work will begin immediately, and that all Egyptians will be included in the formation and representation of a new government, that protects the rights of all citizens. This transition must happen peacefully, and orderly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all those involved. The U.S. State Department and Congress will continue to monitor the situation and encourage an orderly transition.
