Congresswoman Matsui Statement on Short-Term Deal to Freeze Iran's Nuclear Program
Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement in response to the deal reached late Saturday night to freeze Iran's nuclear weapons program for six months while negotiations continue:
"The interim deal reached last night to freeze Iran's nuclear weapons program for six months while negotiations continue is an important first step. Iran's desire for a nuclear weapon is one of the most existential threats faced by the international community, and the Administration and our allies abroad have made progress toward preventing that desire from being realized.
andquot; While I am pleased with the progress made, there should be no doubt that our nation's commitment to Israel and our allies in the Middle East remains strong. Iranian actions, not words will ultimately determine any action by the United States to provide further sanctions relief. Absent verifiable, good faith actions by Iran, our nation will act swiftly to strengthen and expand sanctions. I will continue to monitor the situation and the ongoing negotiations and work closely with my colleagues moving forward."
