CA Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) joined local community members Wednesday at the intersection of 10th and R Streets to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Capitol Area Development Authority's (CADA) R Street Redevelopment Project. The groundbreaking marks the first of several phases of redevelopment projects along the R Street Corridor.
In the past several years we have seen many changes and opportunities in the R Street Corridor and have continued to make transformative investments in our infrastructure, Congresswoman Matsui said. By making our city more pedestrian and bike-friendly, and by providing affordable housing and retail spaces in our urban core, we can attract new businesses and families to put down roots in our community.
In 2004, Congresswoman Matsui's late husband, Representative Robert T. Matsui, secured $1.5 million from the Department of Transportation, which helped leverage an additional $6.8 million, to complete the R Street Redevelopment Master Plan. With the implementation of the R Street Master Plan, R Street will provide a frame for the corridor's public infrastructure, circulation, historic preservation, open space, and other areas related to redevelopment. The Master Plan envisions R Street as a mixed use, transit-oriented neighborhood that is sensitive to the needs of the surrounding neighborhoods and districts.
Congresswoman Matsui was joined at the event by Mayor Kevin Johnson, City Councilman Rob Fong, Sacramento Department of Transportation Director Jerry Way, RT Board of Directors Chairman Steve Miller, and others.
