Congresswoman Matsui's Statement Regarding DOJ's Stingray Surveillance Program Review

Today Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement in response to a Wall Street Journal report regarding the Department of Justice review of the Stingray surveillance program:

"While I await further details, I am encouraged by reports that the U.S. Department of Justice intends to be more open and transparent on the use of the Stingray device and others like it. For the last year, I have been urging the federal government to provide the public with more information, rather than less about the capabilities on the Stingray device.

The public should have access to more information about the Stingray device, including what it is being used for, its surveillance capabilities, who has access to the sensitive information that it collects and most importantly how our civil liberties are protected. Despite some assurances to the contrary, it is unclear to me and many others how the Stingray device does not collect data on innocent Americans.

That is why I believe the DOJ's announcement is a step in the right direction. Moving forward, we must have greater oversight and accountability of the Stingray devices and others like it."
