Matsui Condemns Trump Administration's Decision to Weaken EPA Clean Vehicle Standards

April 2, 2018

Washington, D.C. Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration's decision to undermine the Environmental Protection Agency's light-duty vehicle greenhouse gas emissions standards adopted in 2012 by the Federal government, auto manufacturers, and more than a dozen state governments:

"Administrator Pruitt is taking yet another step to undermine the EPA's mission of protecting clean air and public health, and this time his decision will also cost drivers tens of billions of dollars at the pump. Last year, we saw greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector exceed electricity sector emissions for the first time in decades. Given the substantial impact of auto emissions on our changing climate, the administration should instead be maintaining the Federal government's commitment to cleaner, more efficient cars that are better for the environment and public health."

Congresswoman Matsui is the lead sponsor of the Clean and Efficient Cars Act of 2018, which would codify the EPA's light-duty vehicle greenhouse gas emissions standards and the Department of Transportation's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for model years 2021 to 2025. It would also block the agencies from creating loopholes in the standards.
