MATSUI SECURES OVER $38 MILLION IN FLOOD PROTECTION FUNDING

October 4, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) announced over $38 million in federal funding for Sacramento region flood protection projects. Congresswoman Matsui advocated for and secured this funding as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Bipartisan Infrastructure Law) that was signed by President Biden late last year. This funding builds on the $285 million she secured this year, and the over $3 billion she has secured during her time in Congress for the region.

“The Sacramento region continues to face some of the most unique and severe flood challenges in the country, and today’s announcement is another important step forward for a strong, modernized flood protection system for our region’s families,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “I have made it a priority to be proactive and take a full-systems approach to reinforcing our flood protection infrastructure. As the devastating effects of climate change continue to worsen, we must look at every avenue to strengthen our entire system. Each of these projects is a critical piece of that puzzle, and we must continue to ensure the delivery of proper funding to build a safer, more sustainable future.”

$37,792,000 of funding will be used to replace the temperature control system at the Folsom Dam. The new system will increase the control of water flow on the American River while providing important ecosystem benefits. Currently, the 45 temperature control shutters cannot be individually and independently raised automatically, delaying implementation of needed water temperature changes. The new shutters will prevent severe water temperature spikes, which can adversely affect fisheries and other aquatic life.

$600,000 will go towards the development and execution of the project partnership agreement for the Sacramento River Bank Protection Project, including detailed site surveys to finalize plans for future flood prevention infrastructure. The project spans across the Sacramento River basin, and these surveys will help identify additional needs across the region.

This latest allotment of funding builds upon Congresswoman Matsui’s work to secure the Sacramento region’s flood protection for generations to come. Congresswoman Matsui has long led efforts to secure funding for the Folsom Dam, including more than $500 million for the Joint Federal Project to construct the Dam’s auxiliary spillway. She has also been a strong advocate for the Folsom Dam Raise project, which continues to move ahead as a key piece of the comprehensive American River Watershed system.

Earlier this year, Congresswoman Matsui secured over $285 million of flood protection funding through the FY 22 appropriations bill. She was also able to secure the critically important “New Start” designation to allow the groundbreaking of the West Sacramento Project, which will provide full flood protection for West Sacramento’s ~54,000 residents. Over her time in Congress, Congresswoman Matsui has played a pivotal role in securing over $3 billion of flood infrastructure funding for dozens of miles of levee improvements along the American and Sacramento Rivers, flood walls in urban South Sacramento, and the bolstering of the Folsom Dam.
