Matsui Statement on Black History Month

Today, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA 05) joined her colleagues in the House of Representatives in supporting H.Res. 1046, which recognizes and celebrates February as Black History Month. Matsui released the following statement upon its passage:

Each year at this time, our nation remembers its diverse history by celebrating Black History Month. For Americans young and old, this is an opportunity to recognize the hope and promise that abolitionists and civil rights leaders had for our country, and the struggles which they overcame to bring us closer to an equal society, free of racism and hatred.

There is an important lesson we can all share in remembering the struggle of the civil rights leaders. They exemplify the opportunity for change in America; the opportunity for a group of dedicated individuals to bring about greater freedoms enjoyed by all Americans. And it is critical that we honor those who have paved the way for the next generation to enjoy greater opportunities and live to their fullest potential.
