Matsui Statement on Cancer Control Month
Today, in honor of April being National Cancer Control Month, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) released the following statement:
Cancer Control Month affords us the opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the prevention and eradication of this disease. Every day, improvements in detection and treatment are being made we must continue to build upon these successes.
The new health care law is helping us to make strides in the battle against cancer. Not only is it providing more Americans with insurance and access to doctors, and ensuring that no one is kicked off of their plan when they become sick, but it is also providing preventive care to millions. From colonoscopies to mammograms, new health insurance plans, as well as Medicare, are required to provide free preventive care, which can lead to early detection and save lives.
Recently, I heard from one of my constituents named Katanya, who, thanks to preventive care, is now a survivor of breast cancer. Her story is a reminder to us all that one of the most important things we can do to fight cancer is get our yearly check-ups; and the health care law makes it easier for more of us to do so.
So today, I ask all Sacramentans to help us fight this battle by making sure they and their loved ones are seeing a doctor for a regular check-up, and helping to prevent cancer from taking more lives.
Congresswoman Matsui was recently honored by the Prevent Cancer Foundation with the 2011 Cancer Champion Award.
