MATSUI STATEMENT ON COMMITTEE PASSAGE OF BILL TO PROTECT AMERICANS’ DATA AND NATIONAL SECURITY FROM FOREIGN ADVERSARIES

March 7, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, CongresswomanDoris Matsui (CA-07), Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee, issued the following statement after full Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously passed H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. The bill would address the national security risk posed by certain applications operated by companies controlled by foreign adversaries.

“Today, the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted unanimously to move forward with a bill to address a growing digital threat,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “To be clear, our goal is not to ban TikTok but to establish a process to sever ties with the Chinese Government. Because the national security threats are real. Yet, the consequences and precedent set by this bill will have longstanding implications – which is why we must move forward thoughtfully. My hope is that we can preserve access to online platforms that are broadly loved by millions and millions of Americans without the risk that they are being operated by adversarial governments whether that’s China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, or others. I look forward to working with my peers and the Administration towards these goals as we continue consideration of this legislation.”
