Matsui Statement at Credit Data Security Hearing

Washington, D.C.Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) delivered the following remarks at a Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection hearing on "Securing Consumers' Credit Data in the Age of Digital Commerce":

Thank you Ranking Member Pallone. I am pleased to cosponsor the Secure andamp; Protect Americans' Data Act that you introduced with Ranking Member Schakowsky.

The need for data security and breach notification requirements are not new. California passed notification legislation a decade and a half ago.

But fifteen years later, many Americans don't know what happens to their online data, as the Equifax breach has shown us.

And in the event that sensitive, personal data maintained on an information system is breached, there is no comprehensive federal law that will protect consumers. That's absolutely unacceptable.

Consumers deserve to know more about how their information is held once it is entered online.

It may be that a comprehensive profile of my constituents' online activity could be compiled without them having any knowledge of how or for what purposes that data is being used.

Consumers deserve a federal backstop when that data is compromised. I look forward to working with the Committee on ideas to best provide that certainty to Americans.
