Congresswoman Matsui Statement on DOJ Waiver to Allow Sacramento Police to Keep 35 Federally-funded Cops on the Beat

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) issued a statement following the Department of Justice's granting of a waiver to allow the Sacramento Police Department to keep 35 positions made possible by a federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant, whose application was supported by Congresswoman Matsui. The positions could have been at risk as a result of citywide lay-offs, but will be retained as a result of the successful waiver. Congresswoman Matsui had also supported the Police Department in the waiver process.

I am pleased that the Department of Justice was able to grant this waiver so quickly, and in doing so, preserve the positions the federal COPS grant provided to the Sacramento Police Department. Losing these 35 officers would have been devastating to our community, said Congresswoman Matsui. I commend Chief Braziel and the Police Department for working so diligently to keep as many officers on the beat as possible, and will continue to fight for federal funding for our local law enforcement.
