Matsui Statement on Earth Day 2011
CA As people around the world celebrate Earth Day, celebrated on the 22nd of April each year, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) released the following statement:
We observed the first Earth Day in response to the disastrous oil spill which took place off the Santa Barbara coastline in 1970. This year, the recent anniversary of the BP Oil Spill serves as a stark reminder of the continued importance of Earth Day and our responsibility as stewards of our planet.
Environmental policy has made significant progress over the past four decades, but the recent ongoing debates over climate change, offshore drilling, and the role of the Environmental Protection Agency, show that the fight to enact responsible policies continues. This year, more than ever, we must recommit ourselves to fighting for measures that protect our air, water, and lands, and to continuing to pursue a clean energy future for Sacramento, for our nation, and for our planet. We must work towards passing on a healthy, vibrant planet for our children and grandchildren.
Congresswoman Matsui is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
