Matsui Statement on Flood Control Funding in President Obama's Budget
$97.5 Million for Flood Control Proves Sacramento's Priorities are National Priorities

Today, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (D-Sacramento) released the following statement on President Obama's fiscal year 2011 budget and federal funding for Sacramento-area flood control projects, reaffirming that Sacramento's priorities are national priorities:

The President's budget represents his priorities for next year, and serves as a marker for Congress, who appropriates all federal funding. We have a variety of ongoing flood protection improvement projects and other upcoming efforts which will require additional federal support. I am pleased that the President has called for an investment of $97.5 million into our local flood protection projects. While the President's requests for Sacramento's flood needs are slightly higher than last year's budget, our requirements are increasing as major projects including Folsom Dam and around the Natomas Basin are approaching their peak requirements. This is a good starting point, and I will work with my colleagues to continue fighting for Sacramento's needs.

The President's budget comes at a time when state and local budget cuts are shrinking and the federal government must step-up to fulfill its responsibilities. I will continue to work every day to protect Sacramento's top priorities and most specifically public safety. As the most at-risk river city in the country, we cannot afford to let our flood control priorities fall behind.

The President's budget for Fiscal Year 2011 includes the following for Sacramento-area flood protection projects:

Folsom Modifications - $78,000,000
Sacramento River Bank Protection - $10,000,000
South Sac Stream Group - $4,800,000
Common Features - $4,200,000
Folsom Raise - $500,000
