MATSUI STATEMENT ON THE HOSTAGE RELEASE AGREEMENT IN GAZA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) issued the following statement after the implementation of a temporary ceasefire, the initial release of hostages held by Hamas, and the increased delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
“I am relieved to see the agreement moving forward as planned – a temporary ceasefire put in place, the initial release of hostages back to their loved ones, and the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians.
“I have spoken to those with loved ones held hostage. They shared their grief and their feelings of helplessness. I felt their pain, their anxiety, and their fear. The first group of hostages returning home is an important step to reuniting all of these families. This is only the beginning – I hope the continued release of hostages over the next days demonstrates how diplomacy produces results. Fortunately, the commitment shown to upholding this agreement so far gives me hope that we can and will build upon this important progress to secure the release of all those who remain held by Hamas.
“Thanks to the leadership of President Biden, Secretary Blinken, and the hard work of our diplomats, we have seen a temporary ceasefire put in place and the increase of vital aid to the people of Gaza. I have been clear that the basic needs of civilians like clean water, food, and medical supplies must be met. In the days and weeks to come, we must continue the tireless diplomatic work to create the foundation for lasting peace.”
