MATSUI STATEMENT ON MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) issued the following statement commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

“Today, we honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – a remarkable American whose light continues to emanate as a beacon towards justice,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “Dr. King roused our nation’s conscience and laid out a vision for a better future. One where we replace discord and discontent with a symphony of community understanding. Through a long road of triumph and turmoil, Dr. King reminded us that positive change is never simple. We know all too well that it takes unyielding determination and persistence to help bend the arc of the moral universe towards justice. Right now, we stand at a time of great uncertainty. We have to be vigilant to protect our most sacred democratic principles. To stand up for civil rights, voting rights, and the most voiceless and underserved among us. We still have work to do to make sure the scales of justice work equally for all of our neighbors.”

“Despite these challenges, we have made enormous progress. America is and always will be a land of unlimited possibilities,” Matsui continued. “That’s why Dr. King’s words ring true now more than ever. Today, we reflect on his teachings. We recommit ourselves to not turn away from each other in challenging times – but towards each other to lean on and embrace one another. We strive to walk the path of compassion and understanding he put before us.”
