MATSUI STATEMENT ON THE SCHOOL SHOOTING IN UVALDE, TEXAS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
“Yet again, we find ourselves mourning another tragic act of gun violence in our country,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “This time the death of innocent children and teachers at Robb Elementary School. As a parent and grandparent, I share in the overwhelming grief that sweeps across our nation. Words can never match the sorrow of the families torn apart from this tragedy, but I, along with the entire Sacramento community, stand with Uvalde and share this heavy load of sadness and despair.”
“We cannot simply accept these incidents are normal,” Matsui continued. “We are well beyond thoughts and prayers. The American people are furious to be waking up to news of more suffering and death from the gun violence epidemic. Mourning does not bring back the lives of those we have lost. There are commonsense, life-saving pieces of legislation to strengthen gun control that have already passed the House, but Senate Republicans continue to sit on their hands and watch our communities be torn apart. No one should have to die as a consequence of this cruel inaction. The Senate must act on the House-passed legislation to strengthen background checks, and I will continue to fight with everything I have to make our schools and communities safer.”
