MATSUI STATEMENT ON SCOTUS DECISION TO UNDERMINE CLEAN AIR ACT

June 30, 2022

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06), issued the following statement after the Supreme Court’s decision in West Virginia v. EPA.

“Every American deserves to breathe clean air and live in a safe and healthy environment. Yet, today’s decision jeopardizes that basic right for millions of Americans. For years, there have been coordinated attacks by Republicans and dirty energy interest groups to undermine the authority of the EPA. These efforts hurt Americans, degrade our air quality, and contribute to an already alarming climate crisis. It is abundantly clear that the climate crisis is the defining challenge of our generation – it necessitates strong, unified action to curb its devastating consequences. Instead, the Court’s decision will allow for increased carbon emissions and exposure to dangerous air pollution.  It guts a critical tool for the federal government to enact important health and climate protections.

“While today’s decision sets us back on our climate goals, I remain committed to fighting the climate crisis with every tool we have. In California, we continue to set the gold standard on lowering emissions and investing in clean energy and sustainable technology. By setting an ambitious, but achievable, target, we have proven that we can mitigate the effects of climate change, improve air quality, and continue to advance American leadership in manufacturing and innovation.

“In Congress, I will continue to push for the rapid adoption of clean energy options, the deployment of zero-emission electric vehicles, and the crucial investments necessary to protect our future. This is the time to think bigger and bolder on our climate goals – and I refuse to accept anything less.”
