Matsui Statement on Tax Day

Today, ahead of Tax Day on April 17, 2012, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) released the following statement:

As Americans file their taxes this season, Congressional Democrats are fighting to restore tax fairness for the middle class. This week, the Senate will take up legislation to enact the Buffett Rule, which will ensure that people making over $1 million per year do not pay a lower tax rate than middle class Americans. It is my hope that the Buffett Rule passes the Senate, and I will continue advocating for House leadership to bring this legislation to the floor for a vote.

For too long, our tax code has benefitted the wealthiest and special interests while our middle class has suffered. If millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share, not only will we have greater equity in our tax code, we will also be able to invest in our country's economy, pay down our nation's debt, and strengthen our middle class. By restoring fairness to our tax code, we can make a down payment on America's future.
