Recovery Act Funds Announced Today Will Help Expedite Sacramento Flood Priorities
Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05) announced today that $21 million in federal funding has been made available by the federal stimulus package to help address flood protection needs in Sacramento.
"The $21 million in federal funding will provide vital funds for key flood protection projects in the Sacramento region. From Folsom Dam, to urgently needed levee repairs along the Sacramento and the American Rivers as well as in South Sacramento, this funding will help expedite important levee projects throughout the region," stated Rep. Matsui.
The funding will go to the following projects:
American River Watershed (Common Features): $14,000,000
Funding will be used for 96 sites across the watershed.
The Common Features project consists of installation of slurry walls on the Lower American River levees, modification of the Sacramento River east levee in the Natomas Basin, installation of telemetering gages above Folsom, modification of the strengthening of levees, installation of a closure structure at Mayhew Drain and modification of Natomas Cross Canal Levees flood warning system.
South Sacramento County Streams: $4,000,000
Funding will be used to construct 3,000 feet of levees.
The South Sacramento County Streams project includes channel and levee improvements, detention facilities, ecosystem restoration and recreation features which will protect Sacramento from high water from the Mokelumne-Cosumnes River system as well as the Morrison Creek watershed.
American River Watershed (Folsom Dam Raise): $3,000,000
Funding will be used to provide environmental mitigation that would restore 55 acres of oak and riparian habitat along the American River Parkway, which was required as part of the flood protection improvements.
The federal funds are a part of the robust American Recovery and Reinvestment Act supported by Rep. Matsui and signed-into law by President Obama just ten weeks ago. Funds announced by Congresswoman Matsui today have been allocated through the Army Corps of Engineers and will be distributed to the Sacramento District of the Corps and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency.
"With this funding, Sacramento has received nearly $200 million as a result of the Recovery Act. These federal funds are addressing vital needs within our community, from rebuilding schools, to helping the homeless, to addressing public safety issues," said Rep. Matsui. "The federal recovery package is helping our community when we need it most and putting people to work."
