Rep. Doris Matsui Announces $600,000 for Clean-Up, Preparation for Redevelopment of Sacramento Brownfields

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui announced Sacramento will receive $600,000 in federal funding to assess and clean-up hazardous Brownfields sites and prepare them for safe redevelopment. The City of Sacramento will receive $400,000 in Fiscal Year andlsquo;09 to assess 15 to 25 sites throughout the city for hazardous substances and petroleum contamination through the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Brownfield Program. The EPA will also award the City $200,000 to clean-up a park site at the corner of 19th and Q Street, which has been historically used for heavy manufacturing and as a railway corridor.

"I am pleased to announce that Congress and the Obama Administration are working together to clean-up our cities, and invest in Sacramento," said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. "This funding is only one part of our commitment to clean-up and rehabilitate our nation's urban cores. It is one of many steps that get us closer to making Sacramento one of America's most livable cities."

With funding made available by the EPA, the City of Sacramento is going to assess sites in Oak Park, along the Stockton Boulevard, Franklin Boulevard, Florin Road, and Broadway corridors for hazardous materials and substances in two phases. Assessment of Brownfield sites will provide information about the extent of contamination, and will help expedite redevelopment planning in targeted areas. Clean-up of the 19th and Q Street site will also allow the City to move forward with its plans to convert the site into a neighborhood park.
