Rep. Doris Matsui Announces Release of Nearly $1 Million for Sacramento Light Rail Maintenance
Helps Secure Federal Funds for Regional Transit

"By investing in our nation's transit infrastructure, we are making our communities more livable, invigorating the local economy, and continuing to give Sacramentans the various transportation options they want and deserve," stated Rep. Matsui.

A long-time proponent of the Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT)'s efforts, Rep. Matsui continues to work to ensure that Sacramento's public transit needs are met in both the stimulus as well as in the yearly Federal appropriations process. Congresswoman Matsui applauded the news of today's funding which will help improve Sacramento's public transit systems through the almost $1 million investment in RT, as well as an additional $4 million for the City of Elk Grove to purchase eight buses and further our region's transportation systems.

"Preventative maintenance is one of the smartest and most financially sound actions we can take to ensure the smooth and safe operation of our light rail," said Matsui. "Americans rely heavily on our infrastructure each day to carry out as simple tasks as commuting to work. In these harsh economic times, we must ensure that such basic services are not taken for granted."

"Given the current budget situation in the state, this funding announcement could not have come at a better time," said Michael Wiley, General Manager/CEO of the Sacramento Regional Transit District. "Funding for preventative maintenance is absolutely critical for the operation of our system. Congresswoman Matsui understands the importance of funding transit system operations and that transit needs to not only get riders to their destination, but get them there on time. This funding will help to ensure reliability and we cannot thank the Congresswoman enough for being our most vocal and ardent champion."
