Rep. Doris Matsui to Hold Health Care Working Group Round-Table Thursday

Topics Will Include Prevention and Wellness, Controlling Rising Costs, Healthcare Workforce Issues and Model Sacramento Programs

Sacramento, CA -
Rep. Doris O. Matsui (CA-05) will hold a round-table discussion tomorrow, Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 2:30pm with individuals from the Sacramento health care field including: physicians, administrators, public health officers, and community clinic representatives. The meeting will allow Congresswoman Matsui to discuss comprehensive health care reform and listen to local representatives' ideas for how we can create a better health care system for Sacramentans.

Congresswoman Matsui has been a tireless advocate for lower health care costs and increased access to quality healthcare in Sacramento. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over health care, Rep. Matsui has an opportunity to play a major role in upcoming health care legislation.

Rep. Matsui recently introduced the Wellness Trust Act, H.R. 1940, which would increase the amount of money we dedicate to prevention efforts. This bill will increase the health system's emphasis on preventive services, and improve access to clinical and community prevention services that reduce the burden of chronic disease. By preventing chronic disease and emphasizing wellness, the Wellness Trust Act can make our health care system more effective for patients, more efficient for providers, and more affordable for the American taxpayer.

"As currently constituted, our health care system is skewed toward treating people once they get sick, not on helping them avoid sickness in the first place. The Wellness Trust Act would re-focus on our health care system to emphasize disease prevention and health promotion, rather than costly spending on avoidable chronic diseases. I look forward to hearing from leading local experts in the health care community about how we can bring both increased access and lower-cost health care services for all Sacramentans," said Congresswoman Matsui.
