Rep. Doris Matsui Receives andlsquo;Elected Official of the Year Award'
Sacramento Regional Transit Calls Matsui andlsquo;Champion of Transit'; 'Constant Advocate' of Public Transit
According to the Sacramento Regional Transit (RT) District, the Elected Official of the Year honor is awarded to an individual who is seen as a champion of transit, and is a constant advocate for the benefits transit provides to the Sacramento region.
Mike Wiley, General Manager/CEO of Sacramento RT, called Congresswoman Matsui a andquot;longtime champion of RT, who is working tirelessly for public transit in the Sacramento region. Her strong leadership and ardent support for public transit at the national level has resulted in federal funding for significant capital projects, including a second bus maintenance facility at McClellan Business Park and over $20 million for the South Line Phase 2 light rail extension."
In Sacramento, regional transit helps revitalize business districts, allows employers to tap into larger workforces, builds economic revenue, and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions that pollute air and water.
"I have been a long-time supporter and advocate of regional transit and will continue to fight here in Washington so that we can have a world-class public transit system in Sacramento," said Rep. Matsui. "I would like to thank everyone at Sacramento Regional Transit District for their vision and leadership - and to the Metro Chamber, and all of the business and community leaders for their dedication to and support of public transit in the Sacramento region."
Congresswoman Matsui has helped secure federal funding for area transit projects, and voted in favor of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is continuing to bring federal funds home to Sacramento and investing in local transportation projects. Sacramento has already been awarded $112 million in transportation funds, which will help save existing and create new jobs, as well as expediting local transportation projects. The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) today announced the dispersements of $76 million of these funds for Sacramento area projects.
