Rep. Doris Matsui Receives Sacramento Urban League Award
Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05) was honored last night at the Sacramento Urban League's Unity Ball, where she received the 2009 Empowerment Award for her advocacy on behalf of the organization.
According to the Sacramento Urban League, the Empowerment Award is given to an individual who is a champion of the mission of the Urban League, and is a constant advocate for the services the organization provides.
In Sacramento, the Urban League provides workforce preparation, helps individuals obtain their high school diploma, encourages youth participation in civic life, and provides opportunities for disadvantaged youth.
"I have been a long-time supporter of the Sacramento Urban League, and have a deep admiration for the tremendous work the League does for the people of Sacramento," said Congresswoman Matsui. "The Urban League's staff and volunteers help many of our region's youth overcome challenges, and teach them the skills they need to live confident, independent, and productive lives.
"On behalf of my constituents and the people of Sacramento, I want to give my thanks to Mayor James Shelby for his leadership of this wonderful organization, and all of the dedicated staff and supporters of the Urban League who are making a real difference in the lives and livelihoods of Sacramentans."
