Rep. Doris Matsui Response to President Obama's Address to Joint Session of Congress

Calls for Fast Relief for Homeowners

Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-05) issued the following statement today responding to President Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress:

andquot;As Sacramentans understand all too well, our country is facing one of its most serious financial crises, and the grave economic challenges we face are interrelated. President Obama and I share the belief that in order to put our country on a path to recovery, we need strong leadership in Washington to assist the hard-working and responsible Americans who have become vulnerable to foreclosure, job loss, unpaid medical bills, and bankruptcy because of the irresponsible financial culture that spiraled out of control. I agree with President Obama that in order to change our current trajectory and ensure a brighter future, we must change our habits and get our financial house in order.

andquot;The danger is not in doing too much, it is in doing too little. We must spur job growth and at the same time save jobs currently at risk; we need to aid struggling homeowners while also responsibly encouraging first-time homeownership; we must stabilize our economy and modernize it for the 21st century; and we must have honest budgeting that reflects our national priorities.

andquot;That's why I joined a large majority in Congress to pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is estimated to save or create 7,800 jobs in Sacramento, and includes rigorous oversight and accountability to ensure that the days of lax oversight are over. I also support the President's Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan, which tackles the root of the current economic crisis by making it easier for homeowners to modify their mortgage payments, and reduce the number of foreclosures.

andquot;I will continue to work each day to figure out how to ease the burden on homeowners and help families stay in their homes. I look forward to continue working with the Obama Administration to provide fast and real economic relief for all Americans and a brighter future for the next generation.andquot;
