Rep. Doris Matsui to Visit St. John's Shelter for Women and Children Wednesday
Will Tour Shelter; Visit with Staff, Volunteers and Service UsersSacramento, CA - Rep. Doris O. Matsui (CA-05) will visit St. John's Shelter for Women and Children on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 4:00 PM to tour the shelter, meet with St. John's Executive Director Michele Steeb and center volunteers, and speak with women and children about their experiences.

In the wake of the current economic crisis and the resulting rise of foreclosures, job-loss and homelessness, Rep. Matsui remains focused on bringing additional federal funds back to Sacramento to help our community tackle these challenges.

The Sacramento area has received almost $12 million dollars in federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for homelessness prevention programs and for investments and improvements in public housing. The Sacramento-area has received a total of $11,895,591 through the following recovery grants:

  • $7,123,692 through the Housing Capital Fund Program to improve public housing and to address long-standing improvements to public housing units, create jobs, and increase energy efficiency;
  • $2,396,773 to the County of Sacramento to support homelessness prevention programs and assist Sacramentans who are currently without a home; and
  • $2,375,126 to the City of Sacramento to provide for a variety of assistance, including: short-term or medium-term rental assistance; housing relocation; and stabilization services such as mediation, security or utility deposits, utility payments, moving costs and assistance, and case management.
"St. John's Shelter for Women and Children is an important organization whose steadfast commitment to providing services to Sacramento families who need it most should be supported," said Congresswoman Matsui. "The federal funds that we are binging back to Sacramento will help support non-profits like St. John's Shelter, City and County homeless prevention programs, and together will help us provide better services for struggling Sacramento families."
