WASHINGTON,D.C.- Today, Rep.Doris Matsui said the following regarding H.R. 3997, the Emergency EconomicStabilization Act of 2008, which failed this afternoon by a vote of 205-228:

"I am hearing from scores of my constituents who arestruggling. I know you are angry at Wall Street, so am I. I amupset that their risky investments are hurting Main Street.

"I voted in support of this bill because we need to bringstability to our financial system for the sake of working families.

"We must protect people's jobs. We cannot stand by andwatch as businesses are forced to cut back operations. We have topreserve people's retirement accounts, their ability to access credit to buy ahome, to open a small business or take out a loan to send their children tocollege.

"The bipartisan compromise that the House considered todaywould have taken responsible steps toward solving this crisis. We muststill pass a comprehensive and responsible relief package."
