Rep. Matsui Announces $220 Million in Competitive Grants Available for Job Creation in Health Care and Other High-Growth, Emerging Industries
Local Public Entities and Private Nonprofit Organizations Are Encouraged To Apply

Today Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-05) announced funding from the Labor Department to provide $220 million to recruit and provide training for health care and emerging industry professionals. Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration (ETA) has issued a solicitation for grant applications to preserve and create jobs by training workers in health care fields such as nursing, allied health and long-term care, and to help low and mid-level professionals get the training and certifications they need to advance in their careers.

Applications for the funding will be based on five criteria including: need, organizational and management capacity to achieve goals, strategy and project work plan, outcomes and deliverables, and evaluation process. Eligible applicants include public entities and private nonprofit organizations. The ETA intends to fund 45-65 grants ranging from $2 to $5 million for each beneficiary.

"The announcement of additional funds from the Department of Labor is welcome news for Sacramento's workforce, for our city and county agencies, and local non-profit organizations," stated Congresswoman Matsui. "The Recovery Act is providing funding to support the training and retraining of Sacramentans to go into high-growth and emerging industries at a critical time, and I encourage community leaders to apply for these competitive grants that will make a tremendous difference in the lives of the participants, and the strength of our local economy."

Applications for funding are due to the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, Division of Federal Assistance no later than October 5, 2009 at 1 PM PST.
