Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05) today announced an additional $98,020 in stimulus funds for the UC Davis Medical School, located in Sacramento, to create summer training opportunities for students and teachers. The allocated funds will promote careers in health research and related sciences, as well as provide educators from local elementary, middle, and high schools, community colleges, and non-research intensive institutions with summer research experiences in UC Davis Cell Biology andamp; Human Anatomy Department laboratories. They money has been available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which Congresswoman supported earlier this year.

"I am pleased to announce an additional $98,020 in recovery funds for the Sacramento region, which will further learning experiences for local students and teachers," stated Congresswoman Matsui. "It is imperative that we continue to support Science and Health Education with federal funding. At a time when our schools are facing economic challenges, the creation of learning opportunities with UC Davis Laboratories will allow our students and teachers to reach their full potential."

andquot;This is a wonderful opportunity for both students and teachers to experience science first hand,andquot; said Wenbin Deng, an assistant professor of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy at UC Davis School of Medicine and an expert in stem cell research. andquot;This program introduces individuals to the working environment of a laboratory by enabling them to become members of research teams, participate in laboratory meetings, learn state-of-the-art techniques and gain in-depth views of modern biomedical sciences. It is a marvelous way to incorporate the world of science into teaching and education, and will undoubtedly motivate more interest in careers in science and medicine.andquot;
