Rep. Matsui Announces Nearly $500,000 in Federal Funding to Help House Homeless Veterans in Sacramento

CA - Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) announced today that Sacramento County will receive $493,838 this year from the Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) Program. Funds will be available through the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA).

"Today's award will help see that Sacramento's veterans and their families are provided with housing options," said Congresswoman Matsui. "As we continue to struggle with high unemployment, we must work to ensure that our service men and women are supported as they deserve to be. The VASH Program is a critical component in this battle."

Sacramento veterans and their families qualifying for VASH vouchers will be afforded the opportunity to elect their housing options through the voucher program. Additionally, the Mather Veterans Affairs Medical Center will utilize a portion of the VASH funding to provide case management to help veterans and their families.

"Sacramentoand#39;s VASH program has had a measurable impact on numerous homeless veterans and their families," said La Shelle Dozier, SHRA Executive Director. "Weand#39;ve seen that a stable living environment has enabled them to focus on day-to-day activities that were once barriers to housing, like seeking regular medical attention, applying for employment, earning an income or enrolling in a vocational rehabilitation program. None of these activities is easy for a veteran who is living on the street."

The HUD-VASH program is a unique collaborative project between the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development that aims to move homeless veterans and their families into stable housing and provide them with support services to improve their quality of life. In this partnership, SHRA will provide the vouchers for permanent housing to homeless veterans and the Mather VA Medical Center will provide veterans with case management and supportive services.
