Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-05) released the following statement today regarding the U.S. Department of the Interior's designation of Sacramento as a Preserve America Community:
andquot;Preserving the rich history of Sacramento is extremely important in the state's capital. When people visit Sacramento, they have the opportunity to learn about the government of the most populous state in the nation as well as the Native American tribes who lived in the territory before the settlers. They can also learn of the humble beginnings of the pioneers and the many generations of immigrants who ventured out West to Sacramento to dig for a better life.andquot;
andquot;The Sacramento region has always recognized the significance of history's lessons and has preserved them as a guide to our future successes. I commend Mayor Fargo and others in the community who continue to work to preserve our diverse stories and the Department of Interior for recognizing local efforts to ensure the American story is passed on to future generations.andquot;
The designation of the Preserve American Community provides national recognition for communities that protect and celebrate their heritage; use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization; and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs.
Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett will be recognizing Sacramento as a designated Preserve America Community today. Mayor Fargo will receive the designation certificate signed by First Lady Bush in a ceremony at 1:30PM at Leland Stanford Mansion, 800 N Street.
