Rep. Matsui Statement on the Eighth Anniversary of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks
Honors Today As National Day of Service and Remembrance

Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (D-Sacramento) today released the following statement on the eighth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks:

"As each year passes, we mark this day as a time for remembrance. We join as a nation to honor the memory not only those who lost their life on September 11, 2001, but to pay tribute to those who heroically stepped forward to aid those in need. In New York, Washington DC, and the fields of Pennsylvania, thousands of rescue and recovery workers, volunteers, and perfect strangers risked their lives in order to ensure the safety of others. These men and women truly embody the spirit of service and patriotism that makes our nation great.

"It is in this spirit of service, of joining hands in our communities and across this great nation, that I have worked towards marking today, September 11, 2009, as the first-ever federally-recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance. I have worked with my colleagues to ensure that future generations honor September 11th of each year not only as a day of remembrance, but as a time to renew our commitment to each other as fellow citizens, banding together to better our communities and strengthen our nation."
