Rep. Matsui Statement on Independent Oversight of Investigation into Shooting Death of Stephon Clark

March 27, 2018
Sacramento, CA Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) released the following statement in response to the shooting death of 22-year-old Stephon Clark and today's announcement by Attorney General Becerra, Sacramento Police Chief Hahn, Sacramento Mayor Steinberg, and Sacramento County District Attorney Schubert that the California Department of Justice will be conducting independent oversight of the investigation into the shooting:

"I support Chief Hahn's decision to request that California's Attorney General provide independent oversight of the investigation into the tragic shooting of Stephon Clark. In this instance, an independent investigation will help ensure that our community can begin the process of healing, reform, and change as quickly and collaboratively as possible.

"No family should have to experience the kind of tragedy that the Clark family is going through right now. We must do better as a city and as a society, and I know that we can do better. This moment calls for an honest dialogue in our community about what we need to change so that people in all of Sacramento's neighborhoods feel they can safely live and raise their families here. I join the Mayor, our City Council, Chief Hahn, and the rest of the Sacramento community in calling on all of us to engage in this needed dialogue peacefully and constructively."
