Sacramento Police Department to Receive Over $9.5 Million in Stimulus Funding
Federal Funds Will Enable Hiring of 35 Local Police Officers

"As a result of the stimulus bill we passed earlier this year, we are able to support a number of crime prevention efforts across Sacramento, including the hiring of thirty-five new police officers," said Representative Matsui. "With state and local budget cuts, the Sacramento Police Department is down over a hundred officers since 2007 and this stimulus funding is a huge step forward in getting more officers on the street. This announcement is certainly welcome news for the Sacramento Police Department, and I will continue to explore all funding opportunities at the federal level to support each of our region's law enforcement agencies."

The federal funding announced today is a competitive grant that will provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for newly hired officers for three years. The Sacramento Police Department will then be required to retain the grant-funded positions for a fourth year. The Recovery Act grants is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Service, through the COPS Hiring Recovery Program.

"Keeping the people of Sacramento safe and secure is my number one priority, whether that means flood protection or supporting our local law enforcement," said Congresswoman Matsui. "As state and local budgets continue to face cuts, I will continue to be a strong advocate for federal support for our region's law enforcement initiatives, and look forward to continuing to secure funds for the projects that help keep our city safe."
