Service Caucus Co-Chairs Matsui and Price Call for Involvement in Martin Luther King National Day of Service

Today,Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) and Congressman David Price (D-NC), Co-Chairs of the National Service Caucus, called on communities across the country to observe the Martin Luther King National Day of Service on Monday, January 18th by giving back through hands-on service programs.

"Service is powerful," said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. "By coming together with thecommon goal of giving back to our communities, we lift each other up while helping our neighbors. I encourage everyone to honor the legacy of Dr. King this holiday weekend by serving their communities. Even the smallest action makes a big impact when we all contribute."

"Giving back to our neighbors and communities improves our national well-being and helps us to overcome the many issues that divide us," said Congressman Price. "I am pleased to join the millions of volunteers across the country who will take part in service projects this weekend in honor of Dr. King."

About the Martin Luther King National Day of Service: In 1994 Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act to transform the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday into a national day of service. Since then, millions of Americans have participated in volunteer activities, treating it as "a day on, not a day off." The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) -- the federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through programs like Senior Corps and AmeriCorps -- leads the National Call to Service initiative as well as the MLK Day of Service effort.
