MATSUI CELEBRATES HISTORIC TIFIA LOAN FOR SMF

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Build America Bureau officially executed a $36.1 million Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan with Sacramento International Airport (SMF). This announcement marks the first time funding for an airport project has been secured under the TIFIA program.
“This announcement is a milestone achievement that allows SMF to continue modernizing its infrastructure and make the SMForward vision a reality,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “The SMF team is always looking at new ways to improve the travel experience and enhance the safety of our airport. As the first airport to secure a TIFIA loan, they are also showing their ability to go above and beyond with innovative financing solutions that open up exciting opportunities. From the pedestrian walkway to gate improvements, terminal expansions, and a brand-new air traffic control tower, we are tackling transformative projects that will make a huge impact for our community. That’s why I have been such a strong, long-time advocate for bold federal investments in our airport. They deliver every time – and I know this announcement will only catalyze more positive growth in the future.”
“This TIFIA loan represents a pivotal achievement for SMF. Through collaboration with our elected officials, the Build America Bureau, and the Federal Aviation Administration, we’ve leveraged the program’s low interest rates and flexible repayment terms to secure over $15 million in savings,” said Cindy Nichol, Sacramento County’s Director of Airports. “This milestone is not only a significant win for SMF, but also for the airport industry and the community we serve.”
Congresswoman Matsui has been a long-time champion of the Sacramento County Department of Airports, working together to secure this loan as well as funding for other SMForward projects and a new SMF Tower. The loan will provide critical financing for the new Pedestrian Walkway, offering significant cost savings and supporting long-term infrastructure improvements.
