MATSUI STATEMENT ON FINALIZED CAFE STANDARDS

June 7, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) issued the following statement in response to the finalization of the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for passenger vehicles model years 2027-2031 and light-duty trucks model years 2029-2031. As co-chair of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), Congresswoman Matsui has long been a champion of bold climate action and the adoption of ambitious fuel economy and vehicle emission standards.

“Today’s announcement is a crucial step to save Americans money at the pump while reducing carbon pollution and improving public health,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “These new CAFE standards will save consumers over $23 billion in fuel costs while promoting innovation in the automotive sector. Building upon new rigorous tailpipe emission standards and the transformational investments in the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, these new fuel economy standards are part of our comprehensive action towards a cleaner, safer, and more resilient future. I applaud the Biden Administration for continuing to take aggressive action to catalyze our clean energy sector and tackle the climate crisis.”

In this final rule, fuel economy will increase 2% per year for model years 2027-2031 for passenger cars, while light trucks will increase 2% per year for model years 2029-2031. These increases will bring the average light-duty vehicle fuel economy up to approximately 50.4 miles per gallon by model year 2031.
