Education
Universal access to quality education is one of Congresswoman Matsui’s top priorities in Congress. She believes we need to improve our education system from Pre-K through college, both in Sacramento and nationwide.<br />\

Congresswoman Matsui supported a bipartisan, far-reaching education law that replaced the No Child Left Behind Act called the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA aims to prepare our children for the challenges of the future by investing in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, increasing access to high quality preschool, and raising academic standards.<br />\

Congresswoman Matsui is also committed to making sure that high school graduates have access to an affordable college education. The Congresswoman believes all young people should be able to fulfill their higher education ambitions. In order to cultivate a well-trained, competitive workforce that is capable of keeping abreast of the dynamic global market, the dream of a college education must be within the reach of every qualified student. The Congresswoman has continued to support the Pell Grant program and oppose cuts to these grants, which help make higher education a reality for so many young people.<br />\

Local educators and administrative staff have also done a wonderful job applying for new federal grant opportunities. The Congresswoman will continue to work with local school districts to ensure they have the resources they need to apply for federal grants.<br />\

<li>Secured multiple federal grants for Sacramento State for more than $7 million over a five-year period to help the institution serve minority and disadvantaged students more effectively.</li>\
<li>Helped secure a five-year, $1.9 million National Science Foundation grant for Sacramento State to help 20 middle school and high school teachers become education leaders in the STEM disciplines in 2016.</li>\
<li>Helped Sacramento State secure a five-year, $895,326 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to launch a project for student researchers called Pathways: Successful Transitions To and Through Higher Education in 2016.</li>\
<li>Helped American River College secure a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to support apprenticeship programs in the region in 2015.</li>\

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-6) sent a letter to Ajit Pai, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), urging him to expand the Lifeline program for millions of Americans lacking broadband access amidst the COVID-19 outbreak.
Since 1985, the Lifeline program has provided a discount on phone and broadband service for qualifying low-income consumers to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities and security that a phone and access to the internet bring.
